Dabatopa

data access 103325

The name is rendered both Dabatopa and Daouatopa. An ancient Thracian sanctuary with dedications to the local cult of Hephaestus and, much less frequently, Apollo, both possibly representing Hellenic syncretism for the local Thracian deity (the "Thracian horseman"). The sanctuary is located southwest of the modern town of Telerig in Bulgaria, and east of the Roman road station Palmata. There is evidence that the sanctuary was purposefully damaged in the mid-4th century and completely abandoned by the beginning of the 5th century. Materials from the sanctuary of Dabatopa were subsequently employed as spolia at Zaldapa to the northeast.

Discovered in 1988 and studied in 1993 and 1996 by Sergej Torbatov.
