Babil

The village of Kebeli, previously called Babil, just within Turkey's border with Syria, was the site of an important settlement at least as early as Assyrian times. The citadel mound and much of the circuit of the outer walls is still visible on some satellite photography, although recent developments have done much to efface the remains. According to Anthony Comfort, this is a plausible site for identification with the Roman fortress Castra Maurorum, surrendered by the emperor Jovian to the Persians in 393.
