Inscription regarding Titus Suedius Clemens

data access 17935

Inscription regarding the tribune Titus Suedius Clemens. Found near the Herculaneum Gate.

The inscription translates to:

"By the decision of the emperor Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, the tribune T. Suedius Clemens, having examined the documents and controlled the areas, restored the public areas occupied by privates persons to the civic administration of Pompeii"

After the earthquake of 62 AD which devastated Pompeii, Vespasian entrusted the tribune Suedius Clemens with the task of giving back the spaces illegally occupied by privated persons, perhaps in the aftermath of the earthquake, to the public property of the city.

On display in Napels, Museo Archeologico Nationale.
