Pizus

data access 2195

According to a discovered inscription Pizos was constituted an emporium for the neighboring villages during the reign of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus (r. 193-211). The emporion featured a road station (the Roman road running diagonally through the Balkan Peninsula passed some 60 m to the north) and a fortress with defensive towers. The site is badly preserved due to agricultural work. The designated area has been left uncultivated and overgrown due to the presence of stone walls and pavement, but the ancient settlement would have been considerably larger. The site is located just under a km northwest of the center of the modern village of Dimitrievo, near the border with the jurisdiction of neighboring Samuilovo.
