The ancient name of the city remains uncertain, but attempts to identify it with Diospolis seem to be unfounded. The city is attested as an important Roman and then Bulgarian stronghold along the Tundža river after the decline of nearby Kabyle. The medieval Bulgarian name of the city was Dăbilin, while the Greek name mutated to Hyampolis by the 14th century, leading to Turkish Yanbolu and to modern Bulgarian Jambol.
