Originaly a small memorial chapel on the saint Servatius`s grave was replaced by a large stone church built by bishop Monulph around 570. Saint Servais was bishop of Tongeren in: 345 – 348).

This church has two crypts. In one of these is the tomb of one of the first bishops in the Low Countries, Servatius; the other one (not always accessible to the public), contains several Roman finds.
