Schanze A: Die älteste Anlage in diesem Bereich war von Erdwall, Graben und einem hölzernen Flechtwerkzaun umgeben. Feste Gebäude im Inneren gab es nicht, dafür Zelte. Das provisorische Zeltcamp wurde noch vor der Anlage des Limes errichtet, vielleicht schon zur Zeit der Eroberung der rechtsrheinischen Gebiete um das Jahr 75 n. Chr. Die Besatzung hatte die Aufgabe, den Taunuspass zu bewachen.1

Before today’s reconstructed Saalburg Fort was built in Roman times, there were smaller, fortified bases for soldiers on the site: Earthwork A – even older than the Limes; Earthwork B – built shortly after the borderline was laid out. They were stationed here to control a route over the Taunus pass. The remains of the earth- works are marked by walls and ditches.
