The mound was discovered in 1988 during a survey conducted by J. J. Coulton to the east of the ancient city of Balbura. Some of findings suggest that Çaltılar was part of exyensive trade networks during both teh Bronze Age and Iron Age. This medium sized site was occupied from at least the fourth millennium (LateChalcolithic)to the middle of the sixth century BC.
