Byzantine fort at Castello di Arechi

data access 97029

Although the Castello di Arechi would be renovated and expanded upon by almost all later dynasties and states which ruled over Salerno - including the eighth-century Longobardian duke of Benevento, Arechis II, by whose name it ultimately came to be known - the oldest foundations discovered date to the sixth century and are of Byzantine construction in large sandstone blocks.
